I use a micro-instance with IB Gateway. I also solves my problem that I do
neither have internet connection nor constantly available computer for
doing the data gathering..
I used the three year option, so this is about 10USD a month (down-payment
+ continuous payment).
(I use the north-east zone)

restarting every day and such. Moreover, I am interested also in data
gathering also during the time European stocks are traded - also for
non-european instruments. So, what I do is simply: I start it on the
weekend and let it run until the next weekend.
On the weekend I do all updates (note that with a platform like Ubuntu you
will also have like weekly updates, often security relevant ones). If there
is no need to restart the VM, I simply restart JBT and leave IB Gateway
running, otherwise, I restart the whole system, restart IBG and enter the
pass code.
(If I would not do it only on a weekly basis, I would probably be bothered
by the need of reentering everything on a daily basis and would have opted
out. This way, however, if I am traveling, I need to keep the card with me.
- sometimes I also leave it on running also for two weeks and then manually
split datafiles into weekly increments later.

@Eugene: your datafiles look nearly perfect regarding start time and end

> See above. Mine are certainly not perfect, as I aim at capturing as much
of the week as possible.
- What I use instead:
* I have a script which zips all non-zipped files (This is the way I keep
all data. It reduces the footprint to about 15%)
* I modified JBT. If it does not find a textfile (e.g., for backtest or
optimizing) it looks for the corresponding zip - and if you give it a
zip-file directly - it just silently takes the zip-file and uses this
instead of the usual text-file.
