I am in the opposite situation, and I know squat about JavaGroups. I would
really suggest reading over the basics of JINI. It does not provide some of
the features of JG that you mentioned (which sound nice), but does provide
features which JG does not have (leasing is one big one).

This way we get the best of both worlds.
Jini in a Nutshell (o'rielly) is a nice concise overview of Jini. I found
it very informative, for what that is worth. I do not think that Jini is
vaporware, rather it may just become the dominate platform for writing
distributed applications in Java...
