Well, the other thing to remember is that these things are not mutually exclusive.  
For example, XDoclet provides tags for hibernate and generates the app server specific 
descriptors for it (sorry, don't have much experience with hibernate, need to fix 
that).  I'd need to read up on how hibernate uses bytecode manipulation and if that 
makes sense for a JCA abstraction.

Either way, I agree that something should be done so that the developer doesn't have 
to dig through that mess.
