Mostly i've worked with sybase ASA (not much the enterprise edition).
Anyhow, i know a bit about ASE yet.

First of all the 11.9.2 is the ASE (enterprise version) not ASA. Sybase ASA
(anywhere) is a more lightweigth database though powerful. I think ASE has
got the best XA support

To get started you should use the sybase central shipped with the dist. (a
java version also exist). With sybase central you can set up a database and
create tables using the menues. I know its some more to it setting ASE
compared to ASA, but we can figure out this if you get problems.
The alternative to the syb central, is ofcourse the command line.
I think ASE is quite easy to get up and running on linux.
