Tim,
      When you are using BMP is actually encourage to use an "helper" class that 
connects and makes all the transactions needed to the DB. However, when opening your 
jdbc connection it's highly recomended to get a connection from one of the connections 
pools throught JNDI. I think there is examples on the docuemtation of doing this. Let 
me know if this helps. If needed I can send you an example of doing this.
