IBM's JDK fixed the problem, Thanks everyone I now have
the following spec

RedHat 7.0
Cocoon1.8 "war'ed up"
tomcat 3.2 "embedded"
JBoss 2.0 Final
IBMjava2 SDK

up and waiting for my beans to be deployed!

to come ~ possibly SAP's open source db
SAPdb-server-linux-i386-7.2.4
