Even a blank process when saved generates vaild BPMN2 in Designer. As far as loading assets into your kbase, you should not use the process itself (BPMN asset) but after modifying your process models build the package they are contained in in Guvnor and then consume the package PKG. That allows you to use the "latest" or consume some different snapshot that you can create from your Guvnor package.
