JBoss doesn't do anything to block or obscure recognition of the JSF classes.  
It sounds like you did everything correctly.

NoClassDefFoundError is something you can get for weird reasons.  See 
http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=GetClassNotFoundExceptionOrNoClassDefFoundError
