JBoss AS 4.0.5 does not come with EJB3 support, unless you install it using the JEMS installer. But then there is a warning in the portal docs not to use the JEMS installer with 4.0.5 because the portal has issues with it.
I think your best bet is to go with JBoss AS 4.2.1 or 4.2.2.
