Good question. I should probably add it to the documentation as a
clarifier on the optimization process.

Most of our development happens on Windows 2000 so we use the Sun JDK
libaries with Jikes for compilation of our own code. However, for the
optimization testing of JBoss, we used the Sun JDK 1.4.1_01 compiler (as
Jikes can't handle optimizations and IBM have not released a SDK 1.4.0 for
Windows yet). Also, as the benchmark JDK reference, we thought it fair to
use Sun's compiler to perform the JBoss build. So we were surprised with
the results in terms of memory space though not so much with the speed as
we know that IBM are pretty good with engineering their SDK/JVM.
