You haven't posted your configuration that shows you have 1000 mdbs. Most likely you have configured the pool and not the most important part which is the serversession pool (default size 15). See the FAQ topic for some examples.
Even so, it depends what your MDB does. You only have so much cpu. If it takes .5 seconds of cpu to process a request that is 20 requests in 10 seconds for one cpu (and I assume nothing else is using cpu).
