This should work. Both methods use getFormattedFieldValue(), which is using 
getNullFieldValue() to retrieve the null field value...
Just tested it with bookstore/testBOOKSListAutoUpdate.jsp and the value and the 
oldValue for the test null value are the same.
And autoupdate do not raise update.
