You are using an obsolete version of Emacs, probably 20.3.1, that includes
a version of speedbar that has the bug you are seeing. You did not see this
bug with JDE 2.1.5 because JDE 2.1.5 provides its own version of speedbar
that does not have the bug.
Your options:
- Upgrade to the latest version of Emacs (best)
- Replace the 20.3.1 version of speedbar with the latest version or the
version shipped with JDE 2.1.5
