I would like that too.  It could also be a small pop-up window
(I hate to use J++ as an example) but I guess this wouldn't
work as well over a telnet session.

i think it's a great improvement.
I suggest the following behaviour:
when writing a variable, after writing the dot i would click TAB and a new
buffer would list all the available methods to this variable. The window
would be split in two, one with the edited file, the other with this
buffer...

I think this would be great :-)
