Fail on scan of long .java files

GNU Emacs 20.6.1 (i386-*-nt5.0.2195) of Tue Feb 29 2000
Windows 2K
Cygwin 

On longer .java files (such as ones of length 1850 lines), the scan fails
(when the sharp signs are reeling out).

Does anyone know how to get the scanning to work on long files?
