This works fine in many clients right now. I often search jabber.com's JUD for informatino. The privacy issue is moot when the user knowingly uploads their vCard to the public JUD they are on. The JUD could also have been made internal.
On another note, we've looked at mechanisms to try and tie JUDs together, and it's not a pretty problem.
