I vaguely remember Powwow. I don't remember if it came out before ICQ for sure tho. The main things I remember from Powwow are:
Chats similar to "talk" in unix where you can see as they type. Sound effects (a big laugh when someone types "lol") LOL www surfing whatever your buddy was surfing I think it had IRC-style multiple chats too, but I'm not positive.
