Not quite, the SOAP service I'm using is my works product, we have connectivity to many different telco providers accross New Zealand, Australian, North America, Europe.



The is no such things a generic public SMS access, as you have to have
access to an SMSC. An only telecom operators have SMSCs.

Yes, we have accounts with multiple SMSC providers and our SOAP gateway routes out to the various SMSCs, whether they use SMPP, SOAP, or some bastardized XML/HTTPPOST format. All the "enduser" cares about is that they send a message through a uniform SOAP call, and it gets routed and sent.

Not using gateway, at least not that I see...
