I agree to 70%, unstable yes - the main question is: what is unstable - i think it's XP. on linux java runs like a dream. on 2000 all releases run perfect, too.


I'll have to disagree that the Sun VM's are unstable under Windows (and even XP). Perhaps you're using old VM versions? The fairly new 1.4.2 release is especially stable and fast. It also includes a new Windows XP look and feel which means that Swing apps can be made to look like native apps.

I run Greenthumb hours a day - after 1-2 hours the XP machine gets unstable - memory usage stays stable at 7-10 mb, it's just the machine that's lagged - and it's not only when running greenthumb.
on linux it runs like a hot knife through butter for days - but can be the applet environment in particular on XP.
