There are two parts:

1) Web browser must know what to do with the new "im" or "xmpp" protocol.
2) Your jabber client must be able to receive a message from the OS or
the browser.

I believe that AIM configures these two things itself upon install,
but only for the way that they do it.

As far as practical methods...

You can register the im or xmpp handler in Firefox like so:

I don't know if any jabber clients do #2 yet though.  There's been
much discussion of how to do it with Psi, but we have a somewhat
unique problem in that it's pretty difficult to do in a way that works
on all 3 platforms we support.
