I've been wanting this since forever. Email has mbox and Maildir. IM could use something similar. Maybe we could even just use an email format (conversations in RFC822 format anyone?). I say it now just so it gets said. Early revisions of XEP-136 included a XML file format spec, though it was removed due to being out of scope. Maybe someone can start a new XEP that specifically discusses a file format. Even though it's not a network protocol, I think the XSF is not a terrible place to pursue this. It reminds me of XEP-38 (emoticon file format).
