However ... and this is the second time i post this link; http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html (Alan please put that link in the FAQ!). So when you ask a question it should NOT be just; "How does one make the confoolubater lookup the humperdink on the retalux with donnysump?"; You should supply a little information to show that you already DID 'RTFM' and 'STFW'* ... thus; "I am trying to get a lookup to the humperdink from the confoolubater that's on the retalux using donnysump version 4.0. However I can't see how to get the retalux to return the confoolubater interface. I looked in the donnysump manual but there was nothing in there about retaluxes or the humperdink. So I went to the javadoc for the confoolubater which says to use the method getHumperdink() but the javadoc for the retalux doesn't say anything about confoolubaters at all. Finally I STFW with Google but all the answers there appeared to be either about the new donnysump 4.5 which we don't have a licence for, or were otherwise completely misleading questions about the donnysump end-user interface, not the API. I would appreciate it if someone could point out where I should go to next in order to find out the answer?" That question shows everyone you at least tried to find the answer yourself. As it says in the smart-questions FAQ; " ... notice the subtle but important difference between demanding "Give me an answer" and "Please help me figure out what additional diagnostics I can run to achieve enlightenment."" Speaking for myself, I always like it when I discover the answer on my own, even if someone had to point me in the general direction first, rather than just relying on a source code cut'n'paste. Finally, I always find it at matter of convienience if you post the answer you eventually find out back into the list. Someone who later STFW for your exact problem may come across a web archive of your question; it's always gratifying to find the *answer* there as well as the question. regs scot. * RTFM == read the f*king manual; STFW == search the f*king web. S'cuse the French, but like FUBAR, that's the way it is *meant* to be. PS. In my experience, all mailings lists go through this sort of pain at some time in their growth cycle (sometimes it's topic related). Whether they survive it or not is a measure of how successful the list will be. YMMV. ___________________________________________ Scot Mcphee - Snr Developer - (mobile) +61-412-957414 ___________________________________________ Tigerex - http://www.tigerex.net - (bus) +61-2-82593613 ___________________________________________ To change your JDJList options, please visit: http://www.sys-con.com/java/list.cfm
