If you do this though it's helpful to have a little caret symbol next to
the text to indicate there's a clickable.  You probably only need this on
the rightmost breadcrumb?

Also, if they stay dropped down until after you click somewhere else you
don't get problems where moving the pointer out of the path accidentally
causes you to have to start again.

Twitter Bootstrap[1] does this nicely IMO.
