seems to be working well and is I think ready for general review. I also wrote a sample manager that ZIP-compresses artifacts; and have prepared a patch to the (closed-source) CloudBees Fast Archiver plugin demonstrating that it can use the new API to compress transmission of artifacts from native Maven projects.
