I hit that problem recently, adding
<plugin>
<artifactId>maven-release-plugin</artifactId>
<version>${maven-release-plugin.version}</version>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.scm</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-scm-provider-gitexe</artifactId>
<version>1.9</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</plugin>
was enough to work with latest git (1.8.5.2).
