Hey all, So with the dust settled here a bit, I am hoping to solidify some points of agreement:
1) Jenkins plugin bundling has some issues. Not only is the list of what gets installed no longer optimal, it contains a mix of feature plugins that sometimes are nice, but aren't essential to Jenkins and "detached" plugins that are essential to Jenkins but have been implemented as plugins for quicker updates and ease of implementation. Also, the "Bundled" plugins, as they are today, cannot be uninstalled and are carried over from upgrade to upgrade, making all those no longer optimal feature plugins a pile of bloat and potential instability that present a real annoyance to a lot of Jenkins users today. 2) This can be fixed. A collection of CloudBees employees, particularly Tom Fennelly, wants to go fix these issues such that after the next LTS, no one will be saddled with plugins they don't want, but cannot remove. 3) Of the optional, feature style plugins, it would be nice to be able to start with some set of plugins. To do this right, the user needs some means of selecting this initial starting set of plugins, so we will add a light-weight UI widget to the front of a newly installed Jenkins that will allow the user to make that initial selection. Tom and I, working through and with Daniel and KK and everyone else who is interested in the community, intend to start working on a PR for the December LTS that will make Jenkins better in the above ways. Tom has assembled a doc describing the effort here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cG7BTk6BWAr-rPTSVa8HrfqKEROACy_SecIfqT3Udk0/edit# Is there anyone who objects to these basic steps? ...the details of which we are eager to smooth out with your feedback. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Jenkins Developers" group.
