Is there enough gain from the --single-branch compared to the --reference argument with a bare repository on the slave which can be used as the reference?
As you note that it should be easy to implement, you're encouraged to implement it and submit a pull request. Don't forget to include tests of the new implementation so that it will be confirmed that it works with both command line git and JGit.
