The "git clone" man page says that --single-branch is the default if "git clone --shallow" is used. There is a "shallow" option in the git plugin. Have you checked to see if using the shallow option already satisfies your need?
It may not meet your need because the plugin used git fetch and git init so that it can provide credentials support.
