No luck with JGit, unfortunately... I'm getting authentication issues and it doesn't appear to support shallow clones and recursive submodules, so I don't think we can use it as a long-term solution until a few more features are added.
In the meantime though, is there a way to see the exact git commands that are being issued by the git plugin? That will help me reproduce the problem outside of Jenkins.
