The reason we wanted a custom one was because the default workspace that gets allocated contains the job name.
We have rather large sources, so we try to share workspaces between jobs. However (at least with the perforce plugin) the root of the scm workspace is forced to be the jenkins workspace, so they can't be sensibly shared.
