There shouldn't be any playing around needed; the manual says to type

  java -classpath jess.jar jess.Main examples/fullmab.clp

and that should work for everybody.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you're referring to the
following sentence in the manual (section 1.6.3, right below the
command line above:

 ... the problem should run, producing a few screens of output. 

I suppose you could read that to mean that some graphical windows are
supposed to come up, but that isn't what it means. It means a lot of
text will scroll by. 

These example programs aren't meant to show to an end user; they're
meant to show a potential Jess programmer what some possible Jess
programs look like. There's no point in running them without looking
at the .clp file to see how what it's doing.
