Thanks for the additional data points. I have just done another clean
(re)install of Eclipse Ganymede and of JessDE and this time around, it
all 
seems to work fine (I installed the subclipse plugin again as well, 
so that was not the cause). Peculiar. But I'm a happy camper now :)
