There is holiness to His name. We draw strength and confidence from that name. So many believers fall prey to the giant we're discussing today by not respecting the name of God. I'm not just talking about using swear words. I'm talking also about calling yourself Christian, and living otherwise. That is disrespect to the holiness of God. Today we are talking about the Giant named DISRESPECT. This giant will minimize our sense of awe and respect for the name of the Lord. When he is successful, he robs us of the blessings God wants to pour out upon those who properly reverence His name. By the way, He sets up for righteous judgment for those who misuse the name of God. We are to treat God's name with the respect it is deserving, that is with all honor, respect, and with a deep sense of awe. Let's look back at David's encounter with Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45-47: "David said to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword, or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands." Could that fearless giant have fear in his eyes after hearing those powerful words from the young shepherd? Perhaps he realized at that moment that he wasn't about to fight this ruddy young boy, but the very God of Israel? Exodus 20:7 says "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." We all know the story. A few moments later Goliath was down, and David had his head severed from his huge body as he promised. In just a moment in time, the giant's evil tongue was silenced by the young man who came against him in "the name of the Lord." We should hold the name of the Lord in the highest regard. As mentioned, we should only speak His name with a sense of awe and reverence. We often describe God as being awesome, and wonderful. He is that but more. Psalm 34:3 says, "O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together." Psalm 20:7 says, "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God." Psalm 66:2 says, "Sing forth the honor of his name: make his praise glorious." Psalm 68:4 says, "Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him." Psalm 145:1 says, "I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever." Remember the verse from Exodus 20:7? Let's review. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain..." God has many names. We often sing about "Jehovah-Jireh" our Provider. When we are sick, we evoke the name, "Jehovah-Raffah" our Healer. He is our Banner, "Jehovah-Nissi." My favorite is "Jehovah-Shalom," the God of our Peace. I submit to you today that if we are confessing that He is not our Healer, or our Provider or even our Peace, we are using His name in vain! We live in a fallen world, a world that is full of profanity and irreverent talk. We often see, especially on TV and in movies that God's name is mocked and treated with contempt and disrespect. Even those of us who know and love God sometimes find ourselves using His name in vain. Ever heard anyone say while anger, "For the love of God!" or "For Christ's sake" or "Well, God forbid that I...." Even using God's name in these manners for an exclamation is using His name in vain, and it is a weapon of the giant called Disrespect. Psalm 139:23, 24 says, "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Search your heart and examine yourself. If you (or me) have done any of those things we have mentioned, then we have used God's name in a manner that is spiritual forgery. If you recognize any of these things in your life, then you must purpose in your heart and with the help of the Holy Spirit, to make changes in how you treat the name of God. When we do that, we are one step closer to defeating the giant named Disrespect. When we make the stand and the effort to purpose in our hearts to defeat this enemy called disrespect, God's favor will be on us. Believe you me, we will need His favor to defeat the next giant we will face. He's got more tricks than a magician!
