Hello Mike, When I say 'active' users I do not mean concurrent users - we have 1600 registered users and are getting on average 200 distinct users logging in per day making on average 3000 portlet requests overall per day.
Sorry to disappoint if you thought I meant 1600 concurrent users. However, with this level of activity on a low end server, we have not experienced any performance problems. I do not use Apache, just one instance of Tomcat 4.1.12 / MySQL, although most of our reporting is run off a windows machine running Crystal Reports - I pull these through a modified version of IFramePortlet. The site is made up of a modified version of the default Jetspeed menuing system - one left menu bar that changes the tabs along the top menu. A large portion of the content of the site is made up of a number of homemade portlets that pull data from a number of database tables and render it in various ways - this data is manipulated by some other portlets that make up our homegrown content management system. I've posted a few screenshots at http://www.webtronic.d2g.biz/logisticsnet/ to give you an idea of the layout. For instance, we have a news headline portlet, a documentlist portlet and an eventslist portlet. The data delivered through these is manipulated directly by various appointed 'franchisees' throught our organisation. Altogether we have 37 custom portlets. Do you know how many users can hit the site simultaneously? Finally, are there any performance tips you can share? We've been trying to compile a list (e.g. turn down logging level, use Apache to memory map images, etc).
