Yes, it is expensive - we would like to upgrade to the latest version but cannot justify it. With regards to an open source solution, I have taken a look at JasperReports (http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/) but this doesn't seem to measure up to Crystal (yet), in particular, most of our reports are authored by our finance department (non IT) - Crystal's report writer is superb in this respect.
