Yes, we do the things you ask for using our own management system eidonXbase/eidonXportal as the background repository or at least gate for all content to be displayed in the portal. Not, that I propose that you do the same ;-)
However, you must of course load all content at least once for indexing, before you can expect to be able to find it (you end up storing all content once on your hard drive anyway). Then you need a key for relocation of content. This could be a general one like an URL or a content source specific one (does each of your sources give you a fixed handle to the content?). Finally, you need to relate pieces of content to user access rights (don't mix this with the rights for portlets handled by jetspeed/torque). All that means from my perspective, that you need to integrate *at least* some kind of document management system with jetspeed so that you can use - jetspeed for controlling the presentation/rendering of content, while - the management system for filtering / searching of content.
