portlet lay out questions (lay out not working with my theme)

I created my own theme, I want to use my theme with a layout for 2 or
three columns. Somehow the page only shows one column.

But if I use the tigris and Jetspeed theme, the layout works fine for 2
or three columns.

Any input on this is highly appreciated!
