You can use ClearElement and have your Portlet return this:

That would be a unusual situation but it is something we should account
for. Therefore when we integrate an XSP PortletController we need to
use CDATA sections for all the Portlet content and just throw it back to
the user. Right now XHTML isn't used so Netscape/IE will try to make
sense of it. When XHTML/XML publishing becomes viable then the
developer will have to pay attention to what they throw back to the
user.
