hello,
i whould definitive bring this to an end ...
bellow a brief overview of what i'm doing right now.
i whould greatly appreciate it, if some of could say what
they think about it.
i'm currently working for the german devision of
ibm's online journal developerWorks. which deals with
thing such like linux, java/xml, web technologies
and opensource in general.
everybody who might be interested should take a look
at http://www.ibm.com/developer/ its well worth it.
i got their (ibm's) promise having a weekly
(or every two week) column dealing with jetspeed,
cocoon, tomcat and other apache projects.
i think this could the definitive ressource for
apache related project, at least it's a good way
promoting jetspeed. finally we could use every
published article for jetspeed's documentation.
each article could have upt to ten (A4) pages.
below a outline of some article i whould like
to publish.
1. Jetspeed an overview
-----------------------
This should be only a introduction and
should not contain in depth details.
2. Apache and Tomcat - Installation and Configuration
-----------------------------------------------------
I had the felling that its very essential having a
smothly running http server and servlet engine before
installing jetspeed. this should be a step by step
tutorial and should contain at least some information
about apache's and tomcat's architecture.
3. Cocoon - Web publishing made ease
------------------------------------
because cocoon is one of jetspeed's most important
component everybody should get familiar to cocoon
with the help of this article. this should
be a introduction into cocoon's special techiques
and its way of content generation.
4. Turbine - [headline is missing :(]
-------------------------------------
should contain a introduction into jetspeed's underlying
framework and way to connect to a relational database
system
5. Jetspeed installation and first steps
----------------------------------------
finally if everybody has everything up and running
we should introduce into jetspeed's usage and
its basic techniques (portlets, rss etc.)
6. Intalio - An OpenSource application server
---------------------------------------------
finally this article was my personal wish, cause
it sounds very promissing. intalio was a sub project
of exoffice but they now formed a separate company
called intalio inc. (www.intalio.com).
intalio uses most of the components of xml.apache.org
and java.apache.org, additionally intalio has
its own ejb container. ceo of intalio inc.
told me that intalio will be released during JavaOne.
so any help regarding these article whould be appreciated!!!
(im not a genius and don't know everything so i might
need your help while writing these articles ;-) )
note: i guess some of the article described above makes
only sense after the release of jetspeed 1.2
finally i'm about to port jetspeed and all required
components to freebsd 4.0. so this might the very
first package of jetspeed containing automized installation.
unfortunatly i could do this only during my summer holidays :(
to come back to the installation discussion,
i whould finally appreciate a installation
technique like it comes with perl. there you have a
very self explanatory installation (with lots of hints)
but nevertheless it's a console app which means it's
shouldn't be not that time intensive to program.
so far - this was a very brief overview ;-)
finally my vote
+1 for a coordinated documentation project
+1 for a simple but efficient installation technique
some of you might even create some rpm or deb packages,
sorry to all windows users out there ;-)
regards
daniel haischt

p.s. you can download a working draft of the first article
