Simple, forget XMLPortletController for now or rewrite it. It doesn't 
work very well and has not been patched recently. It's main purpose is to
test XSL transformed layout capability.
I plan RSN to rewrite an abstract XSLController which may then
be used to implement the other controllers, as I said in anotehr post,
using XSLT is not a function or feature, it's an implementation.

Soon though, you'll have GridPortletController implemented as an 
XSL stylesheet...
