Question: If you have an application why you want to put it on the front-end
of a portal ?
Am I missing a lot here ? I think on developing to Jetspeed as developing
interfaces to be shown on a portal to applications that will run on their
own pages.

Yes. You need to be carefull here. There really is no way around
