We have had this exact same problem. In our case we are running Turbine on
JRun using JDK 1.2.2. At first we were using the JRun developer edition
which only allowed 3 simultaneous connections. Even though the box would
sit idle, there were times when it would suddenly start hanging at the login
prompt after attempting to log in. A look at the JRun error logs showed
that the JVM was crashing out. After switching to the full JRun edition,
this problem (so far) seems to have disappeared. It seemed that possibly it
was a problem with too many sessions being instantiated and not timing out
properly or taking to long to time out. We are still watching the box, but
haven't had any problems in 4 days since the conversion.
