Read and learn the source.
Look at it with a debugger or a UML tool or however you go about analyzing
code.

A good place for a breakpoint is the doBuild() in
apache.jetspeed.turbine.layouts.JetspeedLayout, and follow the stack frame.
Read up on how the Turbine framework is designed
