I first heard of Oracle's "portlet" concept about one year ago, in late
1999. When did the first Jetspeed server appear? Also, BEA uses a portlet
architecture in their Personalization server. BEA takes a pure (?) J2EE
approach, where portlets are implemented using JSP and the user profile
information is designed as EJBs with database & LDAP persistence. BEA
includes ability for each user to customize portal selection and layout,
similar to the direction that Jetspeed is headed.
