hey diane,
You poor thing. . .what a h***ish trip!
the way I finally figured out travel declutter, was going to Ireland and UK (for my 40th birthday) and my traveling companion brought this humoungo suitcase with an iron and a coffee pot!!!!!!! and was incredibly limited in where she (we) could go. . .had to wait for cabs, couldn't get the thing on buses, or walk with it. Next to her, my day and frame packs and medium pullman looked spartan. . .We parted company after about five days (she got married in one of the stranger sequence of events I've witnessed) I left her with my excess for a wedding present and went travel lite. . .one frame pack for the remainder of my travels.
I keep trying to ferret out clutter in all it's nefarious guises, the mythology of the prepared traveler being one. I've never found myself anywhere where I couldn't a) do without or b) purchase what I needed. and the exchange of stuff for mobility was worth it.
(However before you think I am completely out of place on this list, let me tell you about going camping with my harp. . .not the little bardic harp, but the 62 inch Swanson. . .)
