If by "worktops" you mean your kitchen counters, I have a suggestion. 
Anything that is not used every day (or close to it) should be stored in the 
cabinets, pantry or whatever you have for storage.

It only takes me a minute to wipe down my counters because I keep them very 
bare. All I keep out is the microwave, toaster & fruit bowl. A phone also 
sits on the living room side of one counter and a radio on top of my 
refridgerator, which is otherwise bare. I do not use an electric can opener, 
the manual one is in a drawer. I don't drink coffee often (tea drinker) so 
the coffee pot & filters are in a cabinet.
