Leslie - Congratulations on the work you've gotten done - and on getting the kids to work with you. I'm looking forward to putting my kids to work on spring break, which for us is in a couple of weeks. I think we're going to paint the outside of the house - weather permitting.
Good luck on the new budget. I hope it works for you. It might be tough, but paying the bills first and then spending what's left is definitely the way to go. What you described is basically what I do - pay the bills twice a month after payday and survive on the rest. At least I don't have to worry about the bills getting behind - I can't handle that.
