Not only does it take longer, but it uses more water too to do them by
hand. A full load of dishes takes about 10 gallons of water or less
to run, the rinse and hold cycle uses only about 2 or 3 gallons (if you
don't have enough to run a full load daily). If you think about all the
water you use hand washing, running the tap to get the water warm enough,
rinsing each dish, doing several batches a day, it really adds up.
We're on a well that isn't very abundant, so we have to be careful with
water. When we remodeled the house, having a dishwasher at long last
was a must. If you want another reason to justify using the washer,
think of the money you save on hand lotion by not getting those dreaded
"dishpan hands"! lol It also saves a lot of time, probably a good
half hour a day that's 172 hours a year!
