Leslie,

My daughter is just starting to get involved in activities that need parent
volunteers. This year I was a volunteer mom at her kindergarten. One thing
they did that I as a volunteer found especially helpful was they scheduled
us! They sent home a calendar with our names on specific dates, and those
were the days we would go to the school to help out. If we could go in more
often, that was great too, but we were responsible for those days we were
scheduled for first, and anything else was just gravy.

I think that although I have the best of intentions when it comes to
volunteering, my schedule (like everyone else's) just sometimes gets so
crazy that I have to prioritize what I do, and sometimes things that aren't
specifically scheduled (like an open request to help out, or to get more
exercise <g>) seem to fall by the wayside first, unfortunately.

You said you had resigned as a leader, so maybe this won't be of much use to
you now, but I guess what I've learned about volunteering from the
kindergarten staff is to take a fuzzy, general offer to "help out", and make
it a firm committment. Say something like, "That's great you want to help
out. Why don't you plan the craft activity for the meeting next month", or
something along those lines.

I've only got my experience as a volunteer mom to go on, though, so maybe
I'm just too idealistic. :-)

Pam,
who fondly remembers her mom being a Girl Scout leader, and how much it
meant to me that she was willing to do so much work!
