30 October 2008 - Unity Teachers' Union Leaders Arrested;
Dep. Gov. Says Teachers Must Return to Work
30 October 2008 – (Bentiu) – Eleven members of a
teachers’ union have been arrested in Bentiu, Unity
state. The union leaders were arrested on Wednesday for
allegedly misinforming local teachers about the payment
of their salaries. Schools were closed in Bentiu last
week as teachers went on strike in protest over unpaid
salaries. The deputy governor of Unity state, Kong Kong
Bol, ordered the arrest of the union officials and said
that those arrested will be released only when the
teachers go back to work. The teachers have refused to
return to work until their salaries are paid.
